Buy-in here means the occasional out-of-focus shot, poor lighting, distracting composition. The images are in drag; judged based on their realness. They have to be so real that they are daytime.

A very perceptive and skilled former student of mine, Jake, is the first to comment on the large number of fortunes: "you must eat a lot of Chinese takeout." While this doesn't seem to acknowledge the frequency with which they appear, I believe it is assumed in his expression: "you must eat a lot of Chinese takeout (often)." I understand this kind of linguistic assumption and probably employ it myself, but find remarkable that it conflates quantity (a spatial quality) and frequency (a temporal quality).
